Carson Meyer’s C & The Moon Captures The Magic Of Malibu Beach Life In A Jar

Another member of the Meyer family has been bit by the entrepreneurial bug. Actress and doula Carson Meyer, younger sister of jeweler-to-the-stars Jennifer Meyer, has launched environmentally-conscious skincare line C & The Moon with a single product: Malibu Made Body Scrub.

The Southern California native began tinkering with homespun skincare solutions after a New York winter ravaged her skin. “I was going dermatologist trying to figure it out and really hesitant to use a lot of the things they recommended for extreme dry skin,” recalls Meyer. “I took stuff from my pantry, things I had on hand – almond oil, sugar, brown sugar and coconut oil – and started mixing. It was something I was making for myself.”

A year ago, Meyer’s brother Eli, a fan of the scrub, suggested she bring her product to a larger audience, an idea that hadn’t occurred to her previously. “Selling it had weirdly never crossed my mind because it was something I love to do and give to people,” says Meyer. After a practice run selling the scrub on Instagram went well and reorders were piling up, Meyer decided to take her little brother’s advice and turn the hobby into a business.

“It’s a great product and there’s really nothing like it out there,” says C & The Moon founder Carson Meyer about her Malibu Made Body Scrub. “It’s more moisturizing than any scrubs I’ve tried, so you don’t actually have to moisturize after the shower, which I think sets it apart from other scrubs that focus on the exfoliation.”

Meyer secured an undisclosed amount of investment and moved operations out of her kitchen. “I went through all the hurdles and roadblocks and learning curves of starting a business,” says Meyer. “I left my kitchen, reorganized, reformulated, stabilized, found a manufacturer and went through testing.”

The result, originally called C Scrub and now dubbed Malibu Made Body Scrub, is a brown sugar scrub in a base of certified organic coconut, sweet almond and jojoba oils. Free of parabens, phthalates, genetically-modified organisms, gluten, dyes, heavy metals, phenoxyethanols, SLS, SLES and synthetic fragrances, Meyer is proud to point out the scrub is formulated with food-grade ingredients, making the natural flavor that gives it a vanilla scent edible.

“Because of trade secret laws, you can protect whatever is in your fragrance and not have to disclose it, so a lot of stuff gets tricky when you look at clean products,” says Meyer. “It was really hard to find a fragrance because of those laws, so I opted for an edible fragrance, which was a way of assuring it was safe enough to eat.”

Meyer renamed her brand and its debut product early on when she realized she couldn’t patent the letter C. She meditated on what she wanted her brand to stand for and, drawing upon her coastal childhood memories, came up with C & The Moon.

“Because of trade secret laws, you can protect whatever is in your fragrance and not have to disclose it, so a lot of stuff gets tricky when you look at clean products. It was really hard to find a fragrance because of those laws, so I opted for an edible fragrance, which was a way of assuring it was safe enough to eat.”

“I grew up by the beach my whole life, my mom [environmentalist Kelly Meyer] and dad [Ronald Meyer, vice chairman of NBCUniversal] would organize a bonfire on the beach to celebrate the full moon,” she says. “Being by the sea was always a really calming force for me. I was [thinking] of [the letter] ‘c,’ and I realized the [link between the] letter ‘c’ and the word sea, and that’s where it came from.”

Rachel Carson was also an inspiration. Carson is named for the scientist and author. “She writes a lot about the correlation between the moon and the sea and how they’re symbiotic,” says Meyer. “They’re connected and in a constant dance. I think that’s how I see our collective consciousness as well.”

Meyer is using Instagram and influencers to raise awareness about her brand, but won’t be relying on the many Hollywood A-listers in her orbit. An upcoming social media campaign spotlights ways Malibu Made Body Scrub’s jar can be upcycled.

“I always get excited when people post that do have a big following, but it makes me equally excited to see somebody sharing it because they love it, and they’re like, ‘I just found this new product, and I want to tell you about it,'” says Meyer. “I think there is value in both, and that’s kind of how I’m going about it.”

C & The Moon Malibu Made Body Scrub
Formulated with coconut oil and jojoba oil, both naturally cleansing oils, Meyer says that a lot of people use Malibu Made Body Scrub for their cleansing routine. “It’s kind of a one-step shower tool,” she contends.

Currently, C & The Moon’s Malibu Made Body Scrub can be found at stylish spots in and around the Malibu area such as Malibu Beach House, a number of One Gun locations and My Skin Evolution skincare studio in Calabasas. Looking forward, Meyer envisions her products on the shelves of clean beauty retailers she frequents, notably Goop, CAP Beauty, The Detox Market and Credo.

Meyer will expand her single SKU line in the near future. “I definitely have plans for more products down the line, but I’m trying to grow in a way that I can manage,” she says. “But I am definitely looking forward to releasing the next product, which I’m planning and should be ready soon.”
